As the night deepens, and Bat Boy starts whispering arcane secrets in my ear, things start to take on meaning they probably wouldn't in the daylight.
"Spain has had its 9/11." Have read that repeatedly today.
What they had, though, was 3/11, which curiously enough is exactly six months from 9/11. Three, six, nine . . . this is starting to look like one of those mathematical pattern questions on a Mensa-wannabe quiz. Blame the night, the swamp gas or a little too much "Da Vinci Code" conspiracy theory, but it's starting to make sense.
OK, let's push the paranoia . . . no doubt someone, somewhere is planning a new attack. What's missing from the pattern? 6/11? A little short notice, but it fills in the mathematical pattern.
And it can't be a coincidence that 3/11/04 is exactly 911 days from 9/11/01
Or how about the square-root theory? Three is the square root of nine . . . as six is the square root of 36. And 36 months (or three years) after 9/11/01 is 9/11/04 . . . just in time for an election "September Surprise."
6/11, by the way, is also the anniversary of my entry into the U.S. Army, lo these many decades ago . . . which makes me wonder if Al Qaeda is targeting me personally.
On the serious side, Fearless Leader Jeff Jarvis, the saddleburr of the new media world and author of Buzzmachine, is flashing back to his own escape from 9/11 as the news continues to come in from Madrid.
The best coverage I've seen is from El Mundo, the Madrid daily in ground zero. Their web site, which has been updated continually all day, features the very latest news and chilling photo galleries. It's best if you can read Spanish, of course, but the site has an easy translation link.
Check out El Mundo here . . .
