As many polls showed, a good bit of the support for Kerry was really "Anybody but Bush" hatred . . . hatred that began and continued unabated from the day Bush won (or was awarded, depending on your point of view) the presidency. To be fair, a similar hatred existed on the right for Bill Clinton . . . and was just as successful at unseating President Clinton as the current hatred was successful in unseating President Bush.
Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby has an excellent column about the "Big loss for the Bush haters."
"For four years, Americans watched and listened as President Bush was demonized with a savagery unprecedented in modern American politics . . . then on Tuesday they turned out to vote and handed the haters a crushing repudiation."- Jeff Jacoby
The hatred made strange bedfellows - African-American comedian Whoopi Goldberg joined former Klan leader David Duke in venomous calls for Bush's defeat. (I'm not going to link to Duke's web site . . . for some reason, perhaps since I live down the street from him, I ended up getting e-mail from his organization that left me curious.)
